Self-Ligating Braces
Similar to traditional braces, self-ligating braces are placed to straighten smiles. However, self-ligating braces do not require any elastic, rubber bands, or metal ties. Instead, special clips and brackets are used to hold teeth in place. Self-ligating braces are the same size as conventional braces, and they come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. Some patients prefer self-ligating braces over traditional braces, because self-ligating braces tend to be more comfortable and require fewer adjustments.
Some other benefits of self-ligating braces include:
- Less chair time, fewer visits to the orthodontist
- Less friction and discomfort
- Less visible, as there are no colored bands, elastics, or metal ties
- Less of a hassle to clean
The clips of self-ligating braces allow greater movement of tooth movement, reducing discomfort sometimes associated with traditional orthodontics. There are two types of self-ligating braces: passive brackets and active brackets. Passive brackets utilize smaller size arch wire, meaning less friction and more freedom for teeth to move. Active brackets utilize a thicker arch wire, delivering more pressure to the teeth and moving them more efficiently to their correct positions.
